Freeware/"indie" games
With downloadable platforms gaining popularity, there's kind of been a renaissance of quality downloadable titles . and a good amount of them are completely free to play.
One I'm playing right now is called Spelunky
It's a platformer in which is explore stages that are randomly generated looking for treasure, damsels in distress, golden idols and other mysteries.
What's fun about it is how you learn as you play. As you play more you learn things like how to juggle bombs to gain access to otherwise unreachable paths, using ropes to escape danger and also reach new areas, buying shortcuts from tunnel diggers etc. Even hours later you're still learning and more and more of the game is opening up to you.
Despite all that the game remains pretty simple. It's a good way to waste time.
Basically use this thread to post about other gems like these and try to get other people to experience them

Cave Story..
Made by one person in five years.
Basically a platform shooter game like Metroid with the over the top art of Mario. Pretty good story, with catchy soundtrack.
And is all made by one fucking person.
Several gaming sites had great acclaim for the game and how freeware helped it.
The game's originally for the PC but was released on the WII and an unofficial port on the PSP. Still free.
